Today, Vincent Mosebe stands as a testament to transformative entrepreneurship, having founded Mosebe Enterprise—a company dedicated to harnessing renewable energy and digital connectivity to uplift underserved communities across South Africa and beyond.
From Township Roots to Entrepreneurial Heights
“My story began in Vrygrond,” Vincent recalls, “a small township in Cape Town plagued by social ills… I grew up determined to break that cycle.”
Initially pursuing civil engineering at a local college, Vincent believed this path would offer a means out of hardship. However, as he delved into his studies, he discovered his true calling: creating practical solutions that could empower his community.
A pivotal moment arrived in 2020 when a fire in his own home—caused by unsafe lighting—shattered his perception of energy safety and reliability. Drawing on his engineering background and his upbringing’s resilience, Vincent made a bold decision: he left college and launched Mosebe Enterprise.
“My background taught me to think structurally and solve problems systematically,” he explains, “while my experiences in Vrygrond instilled empathy and a sense of urgency. These qualities have driven my journey from a township dreamer to a social innovator.”
Addressing the Energy and Digital Divide
Vincent’s motivation stems from witnessing the harsh realities faced by marginalized communities. “I saw how unreliable energy access and the digital divide undermine safety, education, and livelihoods,” he says.
In many households, children study by candlelight or paraffin lamps, risking fires and health complications. Adults miss opportunities for online employment or essential services simply because they lack reliable power and internet.
This insight led to the creation of Mosebe Enterprise, based in Muizenberg, Cape Town. The company designs and manufactures portable solar power stations—such as the Tsepho series—that are affordable, durable, and easy to use.
These units come equipped with charging ports for phones, laptops, and Wi-Fi routers, enabling households to stay connected and productive.
“We’re not just providing light; we’re powering lives,” Vincent emphasizes. Today, five staff members work tirelessly to expand access to energy and digital connectivity, empowering families to study after dark, run small businesses, and participate fully in the digital economy.
Innovating in a Changing Landscape
The renewable energy and tech sectors are rapidly evolving, and Vincent is quick to adapt. “Over the past few years, there’s been a shift towards sustainability, smart technology, and inclusive development,” he notes. This evolution has opened doors for funding and collaboration but also demands continuous innovation.
To stay ahead, Mosebe Enterprise employs a dual strategy: leveraging AI tools to analyze market trends and customer feedback and engaging directly with communities to understand their needs. “This combination of data-driven insights and human-centered design ensures our solutions remain relevant and impactful,” Vincent explains.
Overcoming Challenges with Resilience
The path has not been easy. Starting with personal savings and no external funding, Vincent faced skepticism—many couldn’t see how a township-born business focused on solar energy could succeed financially. “Breaking into the tech industry was especially difficult,” he admits. “As a person of color from a disadvantaged community, I was often underestimated or dismissed.”
Yet, these obstacles fortified his resolve. “Resilience is key,” he affirms. “I learned to be resourceful, build partnerships, and persist despite the odds.” Today, his leadership reflects these lessons—grounded, empathetic, and committed to creating opportunities for others like him.
Celebrating Milestones and Impact
Mosebe Enterprise has achieved notable recognition, including placing second at the 2025 BRICS+ Youth Innovation Summit among hundreds of innovators from the Global South and winning the SAB Foundation Social Innovation Award, which granted R1 million to scale operations.
Perhaps most meaningful are the community-level successes. In Khayelitsha, Mosebe powered Wi-Fi towers that bridge the digital divide, allowing students to learn, job seekers to find opportunities, and families to stay connected.
A local nail technician now runs her business entirely on Mosebe’s solar units, freeing her from unstable electricity and enabling her to serve more clients and grow her income. A community radio station also benefits from this technology, amplifying local voices and stories.
“These are the stories that inspire us,” Vincent reflects. “It’s about empowering livelihoods and enabling communities to thrive.”
Innovating for the Future
Looking ahead, Vincent is pioneering cutting-edge initiatives. “We’re developing an AI-driven cybersecurity platform to protect community Wi-Fi hubs,” he shares. Additionally, he’s working on a blockchain-based microfinance token to incentivize clean-energy adoption and stimulate local entrepreneurship.
He emphasizes the importance of starting small and iterating quickly: “Build an MVP, test with real users, then refine.” He advocates leveraging grants, government support, and forming strategic partnerships with NGOs, co-operatives, and recycling firms to expand reach. “Impact storytelling—combining data with human stories—helps attract investors and validate demand,” he advises.
One of the most exciting projects on the horizon is the deployment of 100 solar energy units to 100 homes, each with its unique story of transformation. “While we’re seeking support to scale, we’re committed to making this happen,” Vincent affirms. “These stories will demonstrate how clean energy can truly change lives.”
