South Africa’s technology sector is poised for its most significant gathering to date as Startup Club ZA (SCZA) officially unveils the inaugural South African Startup Week (SASW).
The three-day, city-wide event will be hosted at Makers Landing, V&A Waterfront, from 15 to 17 April 2026. The launch signals a strategic move to formalise the country’s burgeoning innovation sector, which recently reclaimed its position as Africa’s top destination for equity investment.
The timing of the event is no coincidence. According to the newly released Partech Africa Tech Venture Capital Report, South Africa surpassed all other African nations in both equity investment and deal count in 2025, the first time it has held the top spot since 2017.
The ecosystem’s maturity is further evidenced by StartupBlink’s 2025 Global Startup Ecosystem Index, which ranks South Africa 1st on the continent and 52nd globally, following a remarkable 19.5% year-on-year growth in ecosystem strength.
The Founder-First Framework
SASW is designed to depart from traditional corporate conferences, opting instead for a founder-first structure. The three days are categorised by clear objectives: Inspire, Build and Connect.
- Wednesday, 15 April (Inspire): The opening day will feature “unvarnished” insights from the leadership of South Africa’s most successful scale-ups, including Yoco, PayFast, Yebo Fresh, FlexClub and UCOOK.
- Thursday, 16 April (Build): The focus shifts to technical and operational execution. The agenda includes 12 expert-led workshops spanning product development, fundraising, legal compliance, and AI. This will run alongside four high-stakes hackathons sponsored by Canva, TikTok, Lovable, and Octoco.
- Friday, 17 April (Connect): The final day aims to solidify the local network with an “ecosystem run” through the city, followed by local coffee meet-ups and a high-level private lunch reserved for active capital deployers and venture capitalists.
“Long Overdue”
Mathew Marsden, Founder of Startup Club ZA, noted that the event was born out of a need to consolidate the energy currently scattered across the local landscape.
“We’ve built an event that we feel has been long-overdue locally, allowing founders and investors to capitalise on the very real momentum in the South African startup space right now,” Marsden stated. “Startup Week brings together the people building and backing the country’s most ambitious companies in one city, over three days.”
The initiative has secured heavyweight institutional support, led by the Western Cape Government and a coalition of over 30 partners, including FNB, RMB, E Squared Investments, TransUnion and Dommisse Attorneys.
While the inaugural event is centred in the “Mother City” at Makers Landing, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. SCZA confirmed that a Johannesburg edition is already scheduled for later in 2026 to cater to the Gauteng-based hub.
