Despite economic challenges and urgent environmental issues, South Africa’s entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated impressive resilience. At the 2025 Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) GreenPitch Challenge, held in Cape Town on 4 September, a new generation of innovators stepped forward with solutions that merge profit with purpose.
Supported by RMB Ventures, the annual competition spotlighted entrepreneurs rethinking how Africa powers homes, manages water, grows food and closes the loop in waste. Finalists ranged from designers of biodegradable agricultural inputs to pioneers in vertical farming, solar recycling and water purification. Each idea carried both commercial promise and environmental urgency, offering a glimpse into South Africa’s fast-emerging green economy.
A Platform for Different Growth Stages
The challenge was structured around two categories:
- Early Stage Start-up – ventures at proof-of-concept stage, seeking seed capital and market validation.
- Pre-growth – businesses with active sales, now preparing for Series A investment to scale.
This format ensured that both raw innovation and more mature enterprises were celebrated, with each group assessed on viability, scalability, environmental impact and leadership strength.
RMB Ventures: Fueling Green Innovation
For RMB Ventures, a key sponsor, the event went beyond recognition. The firm hosted an intensive investment readiness workshop in August, equipping all ten finalists with practical tools on go-to-market strategy, regulatory pathways and investor engagement.
“Participating in and sponsoring the GreenPitch Challenge reinforced our belief in the innovation driving South Africa’s green economy,” said Aaron d’Souza, Value Creation Consultant at RMB Ventures. “These entrepreneurs are developing commercially viable solutions to critical environmental challenges while building scalable businesses with measurable impact. We’re proud to support a platform that provides entrepreneurs with essential tools, networks and visibility to succeed in this vital sector.”
The Winners: Innovation With Real-World Impact
People’s Choice Winner – Village Bucket Water Filter

Certified by SABS and aligned with WHO standards, it requires no electricity or chemicals, lasts over five years and delivers safe drinking water at scale. Its affordability and durability make it a lifeline for rural families dependent on untreated water sources.
Early Stage Winner – Onmitek’s Magnetic Repulsion Motor
A breakthrough in industrial motor design, the Magnetic Repulsion Motor (MRM) delivers up to 30% lower energy use and 90% less maintenance compared to conventional motors. With solar/DC compatibility and modular retrofitting potential, it targets agriculture, mining and manufacturing sectors where energy instability drives costs and dependence on diesel. Built “by South Africans, for South African conditions,” Onmitek’s technology offers a rare homegrown solution to continent-wide infrastructure challenges.
Pre-growth Winner – Peco Power
With its PowerBrick™, Peco Power delivers modular, solar-powered energy for households in energy-poor regions. The system’s stackable design allows families to scale power as their needs grow, while a rent-to-own model removes cost barriers. Supported by a grassroots network of trained entrepreneurs known as Champions, Peco Power not only expands clean energy access but also generates jobs and local economic development.
Beyond Competition: A Vision for Scale
The GreenPitch Challenge was more than a showcase. It demonstrated how South African entrepreneurs are positioning themselves at the intersection of sustainability and growth. Each winner illustrated the power of aligning environmental stewardship with commercial ambition a balance that global investors increasingly demand.
By drawing attention to scalable business models rooted in African realities, the Challenge highlighted the region’s ability to produce world-class innovation with measurable local impact. For investors, these ventures offer both opportunity and reassurance: solutions that are tested, market-relevant and designed to endure.
The 2025 GreenPitch Challenge affirmed a truth long understood by those closest to Africa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, that is, resilience breeds innovation. From clean energy to water security, these enterprises show that South Africa is not waiting for solutions it is building them.
With RMB Ventures’ ongoing support and platforms like GreenPitch, the country’s green economy is not only finding its voice but proving its potential as a driver of sustainable growth, job creation and environmental renewal.
