Nigeria Unveils ₦2.5 billion Fund to Back 45 Student Start-ups

Nigeria’s Federal Government has awarded ₦2.5 billion (approx US$2 million) in grants to 45 student-led ventures, marking one of the country’s most significant direct investments in youth-driven innovation as it seeks to reposition its tertiary institutions as engines of economic growth.

The funding, unveiled at the 2026 Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG) Bootcamp and Awards at the UNDP Innovation Hub in Lagos, follows a highly competitive process that drew over 30,000 applications from 404 institutions, ultimately narrowing to 65 finalists before selecting the winners.

Each of the successful ventures is eligible for up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding, alongside structured mentorship, incubation support, and access to digital tools, a package designed to accelerate commercialisation and scale.

Delivering the keynote address, Education Minister Maruf Tunji Alausa framed the initiative as a cornerstone of the government’s broader economic strategy. He said the programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises job creation, skills development and innovation-led growth.

“We are deliberately transforming our tertiary institutions into centres of innovation, entrepreneurship and practical problem-solving,” he said, pointing to the scale of participation as proof of Nigeria’s expanding innovation capacity.

The initiative reflects a wider policy shift toward embedding entrepreneurship within higher education systems, a model increasingly seen across Africa as governments seek to harness a rapidly growing youth population. Nigeria, home to one of the continent’s largest student populations, is under pressure to convert academic output into commercially viable enterprises capable of absorbing labour and driving productivity.

Communications and Digital Economy Minister Bosun Tijani underscored the central role of technology in that transformation, highlighting digital innovation as a critical enabler for scaling student-led ventures beyond campus ecosystems into national and global markets.

Senior education official Suwaiba Said Ahmad praised the resilience and ingenuity of the finalists, while stakeholders including Muntari Dandutse and Elsie Attafuah called for sustained investment to ensure continuity beyond early-stage funding.

Analysts note that while Africa’s start-up ecosystem has attracted billions in venture capital in recent years, early-stage financing particularly for student and pre-seed ventures, remains a persistent constraint. By offering non-dilutive capital, Nigeria’s S-VCG programme attempts to close that gap while lowering barriers to entry for first-time founders.

The 45 selected ventures, spanning sectors likely to include fintech, edtech, agritech and digital services, represent a new generation of founders emerging directly from academic institutions, a pipeline the government hopes will translate into scalable businesses, job creation and long-term economic diversification.

The Ministry of Education said the programme would be sustained and expanded, signalling a longer-term ambition to institutionalise innovation within Nigeria’s education system and position student entrepreneurs at the centre of the country’s growth strategy.

In a continent where demographics are rapidly shifting and formal job creation struggles to keep pace, Nigeria’s universities can become launchpads for the businesses that will define Africa’s economic future.
