South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis continues to limit economic growth and personal opportunity. In response, the FNB Youth Start-up Accelerator has opened applications for its 2026 intake, offering young entrepreneurs practical support to turn business ideas into sustainable ventures. The initiative, delivered through a partnership between FNB and Fetola, is designed to help young people build real businesses, gain confidence and create income for themselves and their communities.

The programme focuses on action rather than theory. It supports young entrepreneurs who may have strong ideas but lack guidance, structure or access to networks. By combining skills development, mentorship and mindset support, the accelerator aims to close the gap between an idea and a functioning business. Applications are now open to youth across South Africa who are ready to commit to a year of learning and growth.

At its core, the FNB Youth Start-up Accelerator is about long-term impact. By investing in young entrepreneurs early, the programme helps reduce unemployment, encourages innovation and supports the creation of small businesses that can grow into employers. This makes it not just an entrepreneurship programme, but an economic development tool.

Building businesses that can support livelihoods

The FNB Youth Start-up Accelerator is a 12-month programme created to equip young South Africans aged 18 to 35 with the skills needed to start and grow a business. It targets early-stage entrepreneurs and those with business ideas who may not yet know how to begin. To qualify, applicants must own or plan to own a business that is at least 51 percent black-owned, as defined by the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Amendment Act of 2013 and have an annual turnover of less than R250,000.

The programme has already supported hundreds of young entrepreneurs across the country. Many participants enter with uncertainty and leave with direction, confidence and a clearer understanding of how to run a business. Through the accelerator, participants learn how to develop and refine their ideas, test business models and understand their customers and products.

A key strength of the programme is its practical approach. Participants attend interactive business skills workshops that cover essential topics such as financial management, leadership and planning. They are given tools like a business roadmap template that helps them map out their growth step by step. Ideation and product development sessions allow entrepreneurs to test their ideas before committing resources, reducing the risk of failure.

The accelerator also focuses on the human side of entrepreneurship. Many young founders struggle with self-doubt, pressure and the mental strain of starting a business. The programme addresses this through mindset training, mental preparedness and motivation sessions. These elements help participants build resilience and belief in their own potential, which is critical for long-term success.

Mentorship is another pillar of the programme. Participants receive both group and individual mentorship, giving them access to experienced business professionals and peers facing similar challenges. This network helps young entrepreneurs feel less isolated and more supported as they grow their ventures.

A response to youth unemployment and economic pressure

Entrepreneurship is widely recognised as one of the most effective ways to address youth unemployment in South Africa. Formal jobs alone cannot absorb the growing number of young people entering the workforce each year. Small businesses and start-ups play a vital role in creating jobs, generating income and driving local economic activity.

The FNB Youth Start-up Accelerator positions entrepreneurship as a solution, not a fallback. It encourages young people who are innovative, resilient and willing to learn to see business as a serious career path. By focusing on early-stage entrepreneurs, the programme helps prevent common mistakes that cause many small businesses to fail within their first few years.

The partnership between FNB and Fetola brings together financial expertise and enterprise development experience. FNB’s message is clear: “Our business is to grow yours.” This reflects a commitment to supporting youth beyond funding, by offering skills, structure and access to opportunity.

The programme is open to young people who are passionate, bold and ready to work hard. Whether an applicant has a simple idea or an early-stage business, the accelerator offers a chance to build something real and sustainable. It also creates a space for young innovators to connect with others who share similar ambitions, building a community that can extend beyond the programme itself.
