Limpopo Entrepreneurs Secure R1 Million as Bambelela Awards Back 20 Local Businesses

In a province defined by agriculture, mining and deep cultural heritage, Limpopo’s economic future is increasingly being written by small businesses. From farming and food processing to logistics, chemicals and creative industries, small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) are emerging as the province’s most reliable engines of job creation and community upliftment.

That momentum was on full display this month as the Hollywood Foundation hosted the 2026 Limpopo Bambelela Business Awards, injecting R1 million into local enterprises while reinforcing a broader push to turn entrepreneurship into a pathway for inclusive growth.

Now in its third year in Limpopo, the awards have evolved into more than a prize-giving ceremony. They have become a structured enterprise development programme combining funding, skills-building and access to networks at a time when many entrepreneurs still struggle to secure capital, reach markets or access sustained business support.

A three-day programme focused on growth, not optics

Held in Polokwane from 20 to 22 January 2026, the Bambelela programme unfolded over three days, designed to mirror the real needs of small businesses.

The initiative opened with an SMME Workshop on 20 January, where selected entrepreneurs took part in targeted masterclasses focused on business fundamentals, operational efficiency and long-term sustainability.

This was followed on 21 January by an SMME Exhibition and Seminar, giving entrepreneurs space to showcase their products, engage industry experts and explore collaboration opportunities.

The programme culminated in a Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony on 22 January, where businesses were recognised for resilience, innovation and commercial promise.

Unlike one-off funding interventions, the structure of the awards reflects a growing trend in African enterprise development: pairing capital with capability.

Funding combined with capacity-building

With its R1 million investment, the Hollywood Foundation provided direct financial support to 20 businesses while also facilitating mentorship, exposure and peer learning.

Commenting on the programme, Simo Vilakazi, Enterprise and Supplier Development Assistant Manager at the Hollywood Foundation, said the awards are designed to unlock scale rather than short-term relief.

“The Bambelela Business Awards continue to highlight the immense potential that exists within Limpopo’s entrepreneurial landscape,” Vilakazi said. “By combining funding with capacity-building and access to networks, we are enabling SMMEs to scale their operations, create employment and contribute meaningfully to local economic development.”

This blended approach mirrors global best practice in SME development, where evidence increasingly shows that finance alone is insufficient without skills, networks and market access.

Proof that support can unlock regional and continental growth

The impact of the Bambelela programme is already visible among previous beneficiaries. MMR Sports, a past recipient, has expanded beyond local markets, increasing its regional profile and securing participation at the Intra-African Trade Fair, one of the continent’s largest platforms connecting African buyers and suppliers.

Such progress highlights a critical shift where Limpopo-based businesses, when supported effectively, are not limited to local markets but can compete regionally and across Africa.

Government backing signals broader alignment

Speaking on behalf of the MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Matodzi Rathumbu, Head of Department, welcomed the continued collaboration between the private sector and government.

“We want to appreciate the Hollywood Foundation in this third installation, and we do believe that such a movement, with the support of government and all partners, can go further and more people can benefit,” Rathumbu said.

The statement reflects growing alignment between public institutions and private initiatives aimed at strengthening local entrepreneurial ecosystems.

A wider lesson for African entrepreneurship

Beyond Limpopo, the Bambelela model reflects a broader continental shift. Across Africa, policymakers, investors and development institutions are recognising that SMMEs are not side players they are the backbone of growth.

By combining funding, skills, exposure and partnership, initiatives such as the Bambelela Business Awards demonstrate how local enterprises can be positioned not just to survive, but to grow, employ and compete.

For Limpopo’s entrepreneurs, with the right support, local businesses can shape local economies and reach far beyond them.
