Gail Cameron’s journey from a small town on the West Rand in Gauteng to becoming a renowned leader in the coaching industry exemplifies resilience, innovation, and purpose-driven success. As the managing director of IE Group, Gail has dedicated over three decades to empowering individuals and organizations through her expertise in communication, emotional intelligence, as well as leadership development.

A Personal and Professional Awakening

Gail’s story is one of perseverance and transformation.

She recalls: “I was born and raised in a small town on the West Rand in South Africa. Although I studied voice and speech production, it was only when I was getting divorced with two small children to support that I knew I had to start my business.”

Her entrepreneurial journey began with a simple yet impactful idea—writing and self-publishing her book Voice Excellence, which focused on effective communication. The positive public response convinced her that she could turn her passion into a thriving business.

In 1993, she founded Voice Excellence, employing top specialists and expanding into offices in Johannesburg’s CBD. Over the years, her business evolved, integrating modules on emotional and social intelligence, leadership, image enhancement, and more.

“Communication was always a foundational module that clients needed to win interviews, sell ideas, manage conflict, and learn assertiveness,” she explains.

Life-Altering Experience

A pivotal moment in Gail’s life was her son’s near-fatal brain tumour.

“In 2000, I almost lost my nine-year-old son to a brain tumour. I experienced a miracle and promised God that I would do his work.”

This deeply personal experience shifted her focus toward life coaching, helping clients with self-regard, confidence, relationships, and change. Her commitment to transforming lives is evident:

“The joy from coaching does not come from coaching celebrities, although we have worked with many, but from seeing a client yesterday when the light came on in her eyes and she found the self-confidence to believe in herself and step into her own power!”

Innovating in a Changing World

In 2020, Gail launched My Pocket Coach, an innovative online app featuring over 20 global multidisciplinary coaches providing personalized support. The platform earned her awards like the Most Innovative App at the New Generation Media Awards, Best Global Coaching Company by IMEA in 2023, and Most Outstanding Executive Coaching Company in 2024 by the Global Business Awards. She emphasizes, “Coaching is about sourcing the best talent and applying that to help our clients in the best way possible. It’s not about awards; it’s about making a difference.”

Her company, headquartered in Ferndale with a dedicated team of 25, has grown exponentially, offering over a hundred modules that span every aspect of human behaviour. “Being sensitive to change is crucial. Listening skills and meeting clients’ demands become essential in an ever-changing world,” she notes.

A Life of Leadership

Throughout her journey, Gail has faced numerous challenges, including access to working capital. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Never give up on your dream. Watch cash flow and never stop believing in yourself—even when the path changes many times.”

Beyond her business, she is passionate about supporting young professionals, especially those with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). “You can reframe experiences, shift beliefs, and reduce the wounding that can hold people back,” she shares, highlighting her commitment to social impact.

Future Outlook

Gail believes that the human element in coaching remains irreplaceable. She cites Dr. Daniel Goleman, a Harvard researcher who popularized emotional intelligence, saying, “AI is fantastic, but it cannot reproduce matters related to the heart. Coaching will be around for a long time because it is about human-to-human connection.”

Reflecting on her journey, Gail emphasizes overcoming fear as her most vital lesson. “It is not something someone can teach you. You have to walk the journey and learn about it in its fullness. But it can be overcome!”

Gail Cameron’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, purpose, and continuous growth—a true inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders committed to making a meaningful difference.
