This year’s African Startup Ecosystem Builders Summit and Awards (ASEB 2025) will bring new attention to Ethiopia’s entrepreneurial landscape. Scheduled for November in Addis Ababa, the event arrives at a moment when the country is rethinking how startups can power its economy. For years, Ethiopian founders have worked with limited resources and recognition but the environment is beginning to shift. Hosting ASEB is more than a matter of prestige; it is a step toward opening access to funding, building regional and global networks, and giving innovators the tools they need to grow. With up to 2,000 participants expected, the summit is set to be one of the most important business gatherings in the country’s recent history.

The three-day event will run from November 15 to 17, with the first two days held at Addis Ababa University’s Arat Kilo campus. It will conclude with an awards ceremony designed to honor outstanding ecosystem builders from across the continent. Organizers have outlined plans for 35 award categories, ensuring that innovators in a wide range of fields receive recognition. The summit also coincides with the global launch of Global Entrepreneurship Week, creating a powerful link between Ethiopia’s local innovation story and the wider international entrepreneurial community.

Since its founding in Johannesburg in 2022 by entrepreneur McKevin Ayaba, ASEB has grown into a continental platform for recognizing those who make startup ecosystems thrive. The first edition drew 150 participants from 36 countries and celebrated 88 ecosystem builders across 22 categories. Nairobi hosted in 2023, bringing together more than 200 participants from 2,100 nominations. In 2024, Accra welcomed representatives from 35 countries and recognized 45 winners out of more than 2,000 nominations. The steady growth of the summit reflects the rising importance of ecosystem builders in Africa’s economic future and Ethiopia’s turn to host signals both opportunity and responsibility.

For Ethiopia, the timing could not be better. The country’s startup ecosystem has long faced challenges, including limited access to finance, lack of legal frameworks and classification barriers. Yet the recent ratification of the startup proclamation has sparked optimism. This long-awaited law gives startups the legal recognition they need, creating an enabling environment that could attract investors and encourage more founders to pursue ambitious ventures. Against this backdrop, ASEB 2025 offers a platform to showcase progress and send a clear message that Ethiopia is serious about building a strong entrepreneurial sector.

Seven Ethiopian ecosystem builders are among this year’s nominees and their presence highlights the local talent that has often gone unnoticed. For them, the summit is not only a chance for recognition but also an opportunity to connect with peers, investors and supporters from across Africa and beyond. For the wider ecosystem, the event represents a space to learn practical growth strategies, explore funding opportunities and strengthen the networks that are vital for business expansion.

Organizers have stressed the importance of the event for both Ethiopia and the continent. Addissu Deresse, founder of Elfadize Multimedia and Communications and producer of the RiseAddis podcast, explained that Ethiopia was chosen as host because of its potential. He hopes the summit will attract international interest to the country’s startup sector, which remains young but full of promise. With support from partners including the Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the Ethiopian Association of Startup Ecosystem, the Ethiopian Entrepreneurs Association and Velocity Marketing, the summit is being designed not just as an event but as a catalyst for long-term growth.

Nebiyu Yirga, president of the Ethiopian Association of Startup Ecosystem, emphasized that the summit would help establish networks and strengthen collaboration. He pointed out that government adoption of technology could serve as a foundation for growing tech-based startups, positioning Ethiopia to compete more strongly in regional markets. His view reflects a broader understanding that ecosystems grow not only through individual success stories but also through collective action and enabling environments.

The goals of ASEB extend far beyond the award stage. The summit is designed to drive collaboration among ecosystem builders, unlock access to funding and provide tools for growth that can be applied across different sectors. For entrepreneurs, it means a chance to gain visibility and credibility. For investors, it means discovering talent and opportunities in places that have often been overlooked. And for governments and development partners, it offers insight into how policy and support mechanisms can better serve the needs of startups.

Ethiopia’s hosting of ASEB 2025 marks an important chapter in the country’s journey toward becoming a recognized player in Africa’s innovation economy. The event shows that progress is being made and that the groundwork is being laid for a stronger startup culture. More importantly, it signals to the world that Ethiopia is not just part of Africa’s entrepreneurial conversation but is ready to help lead it.

As registration and nominations remain open, anticipation continues to build. Entrepreneurs, policymakers and investors from across the continent are preparing to gather in Addis Ababa, bringing with them ideas, experiences and ambitions for the future. For Ethiopia, the opportunity is clear: to showcase local talent, build new bridges of cooperation and prove that it is ready to be a hub for innovation. For Africa, ASEB 2025 is another reminder that the continent’s strength lies in its entrepreneurs and that with the right support, they can create solutions that transform economies and communities alike.
