In Gambia, farmers face persistent challenges in accessing reliable markets and often lack knowledge of climate-smart agriculture techniques. These obstacles hinder not only their productivity but also the broader economic development of the country.

However, a new innovative initiative is bridging these gaps by connecting local farms with schools, fostering community development and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

This collaborative effort, centered in Foni aims to transform the agricultural landscape, empower farmers and contribute significantly to The Gambia’s economic growth.

Connecting Farmers to Schools for Sustainable Growth

The initiative is a collaborative project involving the International Trade Centre (ITC), the World Food Programme (WFP), the Gambian government, and the Gambia Association of Local Government Authorities.

With financial backing from the UN Joint SDG Fund, the programme seeks to create a sustainable food supply chain that benefits farmers, children and entire communities. At its core, the project links farmers directly to schools through the Home-Grown School Feeding initiative, enabling local farmers to supply fresh, healthy foods to educational institutions.

This approach not only encourages the consumption of nutritious local produce but also provides farmers with a steady and reliable market for their crops.

Yusupha Keita, the ITC’s country representative, explained the scope of this effort: “As part of this initiative, the International Trade Centre will focus on improving market access, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and strengthening local capacities.”

Keita also highlighted that the project adopts a human security approach, which aims to help farmers tackle complex issues such as food insecurity, economic instability and climate change.

By aligning agricultural development with social and environmental resilience, the initiative strives to create a sustainable model that benefits both farmers and the wider community.

Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture for Resilience

One of the key features of this programme is its emphasis on climate-smart agriculture. This approach involves adopting farming techniques that increase productivity while reducing environmental impact and enhancing resilience to climate change.

With climate variability increasingly threatening agricultural productivity, the initiative’s focus on sustainable practices is vital.

Muhammadou Ceesay, President of the Gambia Association of Local Government Authorities, described the project as “a significant step forward in our shared mission to combat food insecurity and promote sustainable agriculture and practices within The Gambia.”

His statement underscores the importance of integrating innovative and environmentally conscious farming methods to ensure long-term food security and economic stability.

Empowering Women and Youth through Digital Tools

The programme also prioritizes empowering women and youth, recognizing their crucial roles in agriculture and community development. By involving these groups, the initiative aims to foster inclusive growth, provide new opportunities and break down traditional barriers that limit participation in the agricultural sector.

The integration of digital tools further enhances this effort by making food supply chains more efficient and inclusive. These tools facilitate better market information, improve logistics and enable farmers to connect with a broader network of buyers and consumers.

Malick Ndiaye, WFP Deputy Country Director, expressed confidence in the collaborative approach: “I am confident that by fostering partnerships between local governments, communities, and private sector actors, we can empower area councils, village development committees, and other local stakeholders.”

A Unified Approach for Lasting Impact

This multi-stakeholder partnership exemplifies the One UN approach, which combines the expertise and resources of various UN agencies and partners to create a unified effort to address complex development challenges.

The initiative demonstrates how coordinated efforts can lead to tangible benefits, such as increased income for farmers, improved nutrition for children and a more resilient local economy.

By strengthening local capacities and promoting sustainable practices, the project aims to build a self-sufficient agricultural sector that can withstand environmental and economic shocks.

Boosting the Economy and Improving Livelihoods

The impact of this initiative extends beyond immediate economic benefits. As farmers gain better access to markets and adopt climate-smart practices, they can increase their productivity and income, leading to poverty reduction and enhanced community well-being.

The increased demand for locally produced foods also stimulates rural economies, encouraging new investments and job creation.

Moreover, the project’s focus on nutrition through school feeding programmes ensures that children receive healthy meals, fostering better health and educational outcomes, which are essential for long-term national development.

A Model for Sustainable Development in The Gambia

Overall, this innovative programme in Foni represents a transformative step toward sustainable development in The Gambia. It not only supports farmers by providing them with reliable markets and knowledge but also promotes environmentally sustainable practices that are crucial in the face of climate change.

The collaboration among UN agencies, the government, and local communities demonstrates a shared commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous agricultural sector.

As Muhammadou Ceesay aptly summarized, “This project is a significant step forward in our shared mission to combat food insecurity and promote sustainable agricultural practices within The Gambia,” highlighting its potential to serve as a model for nationwide and regional development.

Towards a Prosperous and Resilient Future

By empowering farmers, fostering community resilience and promoting sustainable practices, this initiative holds the promise of boosting the Gambian economy. It creates a virtuous cycle where increased agricultural productivity leads to economic stability, improved health and social inclusion.

As the country continues to develop, such integrated approaches will be essential in ensuring that growth is inclusive, sustainable, and capable of meeting the challenges posed by climate change and food insecurity.

This project exemplifies how strategic partnerships and innovative solutions can drive positive change, ultimately transforming The Gambia into a more resilient and prosperous nation.
