African technology startups building in frontier and emerging technologies are being invited to apply for a highly selective, month-long innovation programme in Shanghai in 2026, marking a new push to position African founders inside global technology and manufacturing ecosystems.

The call was announced by Samuel Gebrehiwet, Chief Operating Officer at Ethiopian Export Market, who is leading the curation of an African startup cohort for a builder-driven international programme designed to connect African innovators directly with global suppliers, open-source technologies and investment networks.

The initiative is targeting African-founded or Africa-focused startups from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt and Rwanda, with a focus on companies operating at the cutting edge of technology. Priority sectors include artificial intelligence (AI), biotech and bioengineering, robotics, drones and autonomous systems, as well as creative and entertainment technologies.

The programme is structured as a one-month immersive experience in Shanghai, one of the world’s most advanced hubs for manufacturing, hardware innovation and applied AI. Selected startups will participate in hands-on collaboration, ecosystem immersion and direct engagement with manufacturers, robotics suppliers, open-source AI developers, investors and strategic partners.

“This is a cohort-based experience for African startups that want to come to Shanghai for a purpose,” Gebrehiwet said, emphasising that the programme is designed for builders looking to accelerate real-world execution rather than passive exposure. Startups are expected to actively collaborate, prototype and explore partnerships throughout the month.

Unlike traditional accelerator programmes, the Shanghai immersion is positioned as a global builder exchange, giving African founders direct access to supply chains and innovation infrastructure that are often difficult to reach from the continent. Participants will also gain visibility among international technology communities and partner networks, offering a platform to showcase African innovation on a global stage.

The cohort will be limited and highly selective, with organisers seeking teams that demonstrate a strong technical or product vision and the capacity to commit fully to the month-long programme. The initiative reflects a growing trend among African startups to look eastward for manufacturing, hardware scaling and applied AI collaboration, particularly as China deepens its role in global technology supply chains.

Africa’s technology ecosystem has expanded rapidly over the past decade, but many startups still face barriers in accessing advanced manufacturing, robotics components and specialised technical partners. Programmes such as this aim to close that gap by embedding African founders directly within global innovation environments, accelerating learning cycles and shortening time to market.

The Shanghai programme also aligns with broader shifts in global entrepreneurship, where cross-border collaboration, open-source development and ecosystem-driven innovation are increasingly shaping how startups scale. For African founders, exposure to these networks could prove critical as they build solutions intended for both local markets and global adoption.

Applications are now open, with interested founders encouraged to tag their startups or other eligible African startups here: https://lnkd.in/drhsEuA7. Shortlisted teams will be contacted directly as the selection process moves forward.

With Africa’s tech sector gaining international attention for its resilience and creativity, the Shanghai cohort represents another step in placing African entrepreneurs at the centre of global innovation conversations not as observers, but as active builders.
